Repatriation notification

We have been advised by RAF Brize Norton that the repatriation of Senior Aircraftman Ryan Tomlin of the Royal Airforce Regiment, will take place onThursday 23rd February 2012.

The plane will land at approx 2:00pm and the cortege will pass by the Memorial Garden at approx 4:00pm, reaching the John Radcliffe at around 4:45pm.

Norton Way will be closed from approx 1.00pm, whilst Station Road, Brize Norton, will be closed for approximately 10 minutes once the cortege leaves Britannia Gate at RAF Brize Norton.

There will be road closures in place at the Marston Ferry Road / Cherwell Drive Junction, Marston Road / Cherwell Drive Junction, and by mini roundabout by the entrance to the John Radcliffe Hospital. Please expect severe delays in this area whilst the road closures are in operation.

I am sorry to tell you that Eddie Milne had a massive stroke during the night of Wed/Thu.
He was admitted to the QMC then transferred to the Stroke Unit (Berman One) at the City Hospital, Hucknall Road, Nottingham.
I visited yesterday and his condition is serious but stable.
I have been asked by the family that they do not want calls to the house or hospital
They will keep me informed and I will pass on that info.

Very sorry to say that Tony Lake, the RAFPA Treasurer, has been taken into hospital unexpectedly and is having an operation this afternoon (Friday). It has been found that he has a blood clot in his arm and another in his aorta.
His daughter Samantha will keep me up to date - as I will you - as and when. Let's give him lots of thought and best wishes.

Update 21 Feb 2012:

At 2020 hrs this evening when the 'phone rang, I was very surprised to hear Tony on the line. He sounded very chirpy and explained that he was in good hands at the hospital and most of his treatment so far has been exploratory. Some of the problem may be to do with the major operation he had some 18 years ago involving his aorta and other circulatory problems, but as yet to be confirmed. He asked me to pass on his many thank yous' to all of those who have asked after him and that he hopes that it will not be too many weeks before they let him out. I will update you again at the end of the week, unless you don't need me to do so.

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that an airman from the Royal Air Force Regiment was killed in Afghanistan today, Monday 13 February 2012.

The airman, unnamed as yet, was killed by small arms fire whilst on a routine partnered patrol in the Nad 'Ali district of Helmand province.

A letter has been sent from the RAFPA to Air Cdr Nick Bray to express our condolences to the RAF Regiment and to the family of SAC Ryan Tomlin 21, so tragically killed whilst on operations in Afghanistan recently.

- Cpl Mick McConnell was attached to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps alongside other Royal Air Force Police Dog handlers and deployed on Op HERRICK on 6 Mar 11. On 4 Aug 11 he initiated an Improvised Explosive Device resulting in lower limb injuries. After an operation in Camp Bastion he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

- On 19 Dec 11 he was well enough to attend the Millie Awards in London representing the Military Working Dog Regiment, who had been nominated for the team award.

The series started in the UK last week with the second part last night; There may be some RAFPA members unaware that the programme is on and / or that there is RAFP (dogs!) involvement. I understand that Cpl Mick McConnell and Memphis will also appear in Episode 6 (5 Mar 12) when the reunion will occur. Mick was due to commence his rehabilitation on 26 Jan 12.

For the second time within a week, we again visited the Memorial Gardens at Carterton in order to attend a repatriation ceremony in respect of another fallen soldier brought back from Afghanistan. Today we were there to honour the return of Lance Corporal Gajbahadur Gurung, 1^st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, who died as the result of a gunshot wound following an insurgent attack while on foot patrol of the Khar Nikah area of Helmand province on the 27^th January. The now, very familiar, funeral cortege format was adhered to with the Thames Valley Police vehicle escorts leading the Union Flag draped coffin laden hearse to the waiting family and friends. The 15 ex-Service Association Branch Standards paraded were lowered in salute and all those gathered on Norton Way paid their own personal respects. Floral tributes were placed on the hearse by the large group of family, friends and colleagues of Lance Corporal Gurung before the cortege departed, to the sound of quiet applause, for the onward journey to the John Radcliffe Hospital. This was another emotional repatriation, made more poignant by the quiet, dignified manner in which the Gurkhali members conducted their obvious grief on this particularly sad occasion. The RAF Police Association representatives at Carterton today were Brian Flinn, Kim Hassall, Tony Lake and Jack & Vida Sharp and at the John Radcliffe were Brian Crossin, Reg lamb, Mike Lester, Pat & Maureen Plumridge and Bill Sykes.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Memorial Gardens, Carterton, to pay their respects at the repatriation ceremony of another victim of the Afghanistan conflict. Today we witnessed the repatriation of Signaller Ian Sartorius-Jones, 200 Signals Squadron, who died as a result of a gunshot wound at the Forward Operating Base Khar Nikah in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on the 24th January. The bitterly freezing cold wind made the delayed arrival of the funeral cortege seem considerably longer than it actually was, finally the road barriers were opened to allow the police motorcycle escorts to enter ahead of the hearse. The large uniformed serving contingent, lead by a Major General and a Brigadier, the Standard Bearers and ex-service Association members were brought to attention by the Parade Marshal as the hearse approached. At this time the 16 Association Standards on parade were lowered, the serving personnel and ex-service men and women saluted during the minutes silence and the large number of family and friends present placed their flowers on the hearse. When this was completed, the funeral cortege continued onwards toward the John Radcliffe Hospital, to the now familiar sound of applause. Our representatives at Carterton were Brian Flinn, Kim Hassall, Tony Lake, Jack & Vida Sharp, Vic & Val Smith and Phil Horton. We were further represented at the hospital by Brian Crossin, Mike Lester, Pat & Maureen Plumridge, Bob Strachan (LHC Standard) and Bill Sykes. Sadly we are already aware that we will have to return on Tuesday of next week to do it all over again.

It was with great sadness I received a phone call this evening from Sandra Smith the partner of a QPD Legend John "Hissing Sid" Siddall. John died on the 18/1/2012 from liver failure and was buried on 30/1/12. At Johns request only Eddy Shears was present from the RAF Police, although it was a military funeral with friends and colleagues from the other Services. John was my basic QPD instuctor and then was billeted next to me at Laarbruch for 18 months, probably guilty of teaching me how to abuse alcohol! How many mornings I was woken up by his station shift colleagues banging on his door at 7.30am after he had slept in for his shift i fail to remember but it was a few!
I next bumped into John when he was homeless in Nottingham about 7 years ago, He was a recovering alchoholic and was trying to get back on his feet having found a flat. Soon after that he had a liver transplant. I met John on many occassions after that for a coffee as he regularly used to call in the Nick when in town. He was a proud man and even in hard times took pride in his appearance and RAF history. The 1st things to adorn the walls of his flat were his medals and other RAFP regalia. Sandra tells be they were buried with him! John had very few photo's of his time in the RAF and if anybody has some they could post I will get them printed out for her.
Sandra also advised be Pat Quinlan died on 5/1/12 from lung cancer Pat was my last FS at West Raynham in 1988 and I spend many an evening with him in the police office after work discussing life over a bottle of Shiras, A true gentleman

During the Executive Council meeting held on 23rd June 2009 at Alrewas, it was announced that the North West Area Branch intended to inaugurate the North West Area (No. 1) Branch President's Award to recognise outstanding or exceptional contribution to the RAF Police Association by an individual, organisation or Branch.

Nominations are now invited for the 2011 award which can be via email torafpa.nwab@googlemail.com or to my home address in the current membership directory. The nomination should detail fully the outstanding or exceptional service made in respect of the RAF Police Association and is to arrive with the undersigned no later than 19th March 2012. Received nominations will be adjudicated by three North West Area Branch members who were selected for the role during the Branch meeting on 20th January 2010 and reconfirmed at the 18th January 2012 meeting as Bob Pimborough, Ted Corrie and Paul Donovan.

The successful nominee will be announced following the Branch meeting on 21st March 2012 with the presentation taking place during the AGM evening reception on 14th April 2012.

Steve, not sure whether you can put the attached image on your blogspot, but Martin Davey is shown end of the middle row on the right as you look at the image. (you might recognise the mug of Grant Graham ex Ascension beside him) This was taken outside the Big House either 1990 or 91, I think 90, just after The Police Flight RAF Rheindahlen was formed and taken away from RAF P&SS (G) control. I am pretty sure it is the same Martin Davey as reported deceased. Such a tragedy when people die at such a young age. I would imagine he will be no more than 45.
He was a good young man with a lot of potential when I knew him

We have an urgent need to fill three posts on one of our construction projects in the North West with start dates of no later than 5 March 2012 and I’d be grateful if you could circulate. The roles are those of deputy security controllers working as part of a team under the overall project security controller.

The role requires a strong working knowledge of UK Government physical and IT security standards and security vetting to a minimum of SC. Incumbents will require to carry out the design and implementation of appropriate physical, personnel, technical and procedural security measures across project sites within a highly regulated environment. This is to help ensure that the project remains secure and compliant at all times and it should be noted that these roles are focussed on the security of the project itself.

The posts are site based in the NW with fully funded accommodation during the week and travel costs to/from home on a weekly basis. Base salary for two of the roles will be c£34k+ car allowance and for the more senior role c£39K+ car allowance. Other standard corporate benefits may also be provided.

Former RAF Police Cpl Martin Davey whom I served with at Cottesmore around the year 2000, died on Wednesday this week. I have no further details in relation to funeral or as to the cause of his death. If and when I do I will forward details on.

Hi Steve hope you are well. Sorry i havent been in contact for a while but got a bit of bad news. Ex FS Pat Quinlan RAFP passed away on the 5th Jan 2012. There is a condolence website set up www.quin.muchloved.com for people to put messages. I believe Pat was also a member of the RAFP Assoc. Obituary Former Warrant Officer Pat Leonard

It is with much sadness that I bring the news of the death of ex-WO Patrick Leonard, an old colleague and friend down the years. He was being treated for cancer and when we chatted at Christmas he said he would call me after his visit to the specialist at the end of December. The call came from his son Justin to say that his father was in hospital and was very weak; consequently the treatment was being discontinued and his father was coming home for his final days. He died at 1030 pm last night, 12th January. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed later. He lived in Telford, Shropshire.

Rest in peace Patrick. I will miss our conversations and your amazingly articulate and descriptive observations. Our sincere sympathy to Justin, Julie and all the family.

Former Warrant Officer Pat Leonard

I was contacted yesterday by Alvin Hill (RAFPA), who told me that former WO Pat Leonard, who has been fighting cancer for a number of years, is in a very bad way. Alvin contacted me in the hope that I might be able to supply him with info and stories from Pat's RAF career. Sadly, although I knew of Pat, our paths never crossed and I have no information about him or indeed his career. Can anyone help fill in the blanks? Any help would be greatly appreciated..!!
